Meet Rabbi Candidate Rabbi David Eligberg

About
Community building and education have been the dominant themes in Rabbi Eligberg’s rabbinate while serving pulpits of varying size and diversity. His interactions with members earned him a reputation for compassion and creativity in dealing with delicate and difficult situations. He recognizes and responds to the unique needs of a congregation and their multiple populations as part of an evolving rabbinate by fostering an atmosphere in which individuals can explore Judaism and pursue their own personal Jewish journey.

Rabbi Eligberg has implemented outreach programs to interfaith families, to include basic Judaism classes, social events for interfaith couples, and a support group for the parents of children in interfaith relationships.  He has engaged with various faith leaders to promote interfaith dialogue bringing together Jews, Muslims and Christians.

Rabbi Eligberg has presented an approachable model of a rabbi for multigenerational synagogue membership through engagement, counseling, contact, and exemplifying Jewish life.

Experience
Rabbi David Eligberg is currently the Rabbi of Temple Israel in Albany, NY and has previously served as Rabbi in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, North Brunswick, NJ, Levittown, PA, and Pomona, NY.

Rabbi Eligberg’s distinguished career has included currently serving as President of the Capital District Board of Rabbis, serving as a Board Member of the Interfaith Alliance of the Capital District, and serving as a Board Member of the NENY Israel Action Committee.

Education
Rabbi Eligberg received both a B.A. in Political Science from Columbia University, New York and a B.A. in Talmud and Rabbinics from the Seminary College of Jewish Studies, in 1981.  Rabbi Eligberg received his Smicha along with a Master of Arts degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in 1985.  In 2004, he was certified under the Rav Hamachshir Program in 2004 and in 2011, Rabbi Eligberg received a Doctorate of Hebrew Letters, Honoris Causa, from JTS.
