Shabbat Parashat Re’eh

Rosh Chodesh Elul – Day 1

September 3, 2016 – 30 Av 5776

Dear Friends,

In our previous parsha, the Torah repeated over and over the reminder for us to use our ears – to hear the teachings of Torah – through the repeated use of the word: “Shema [Hear, or Listen].”

In this week’s parsha, right at the beginning of our parsha, the Torah reminds us to use our eyes: “Re’eh [See…].” Each one of us uses our eyes and ears to comprehend the world around us and our own place in that world.

Our Sages pointed out that although the Torah was given to us as a people, the word: “Re’eh [See]” refers to each and every one of us as individuals. This signifies the importance of each of our own individual perspectives in relation to Torah. Each one of us has a unique vision of the Torah.

Each one of us is a potential “Sage” for generations to come.

This Shabbat is the first day of Rosh Chodesh Elul. From now on, at weekday morning minyanim, we will have the opportunity to hear (and to see) the blowing of the Shofar, in preparation for Rosh HaShana….May our eyes and ears be open to the sound of the Shofar and to the words of Torah. And may all of our prayers be answered for the good.

Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov [a good month]!
