Guided by Goodness: A Blessing for 2019

December 29, 2018 – 21 Tevet 5779

Dear Friends,

I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a very happy and healthy 2019!

May the wisdom of Torah infuse our lives in this coming year and bring us ever greater blessing!

This week’s Torah reading tells the story of Shifra and Puah – the two midwives who disobeyed Pharaoh and saved the lives of Jewish newborn boys.

Shifra and Puah have inspired the concept of civil disobedience.

It is important to note that the rebellious act performed by Shifra and Puah in response to the evil decree of Pharaoh was an act guided by goodness.  At great risk to their own lives, they reacted to evil by saving lives. They did not stand by idly in the face of Pharaoh’s evil decree.  Rather, they increased life and light in the world.

May we, too, be guided by goodness.

May we, too, bring increased life and light into our world.

And, may we all appreciate the wisdom of Torah as we welcome the new year of 2019!

Shabbat Shalom and a very happy and healthy 2019!

Rabbi Gilah Dror
