Shabbat Mevarechim HaChodesh

May 7, 2016 – 29 Nisan 5776

Dear Friends,

This Shabbat marks a transition in the Biblical book of Leviticus. Up until now, in the Biblical story, the sons of Aaron, the High Priest, were referred to not by their names alone, but were often also described as “the sons of Aaron.” And, the garments of the priestly family were described as: “bigdei kodesh” [garments of holiness]. From this point on, however, the book of Leviticus refers to the Jewish people as a whole, as a people aspiring to “kedushah” [holiness].

In a beautiful parallel, this weekend we honor our mothers. When we are young, we are often known as “our mother’s children.” If we are lucky, as we grow up, we continue to consider our mothers to be a source of inspiration and strength. Come what may, the lessons learned from our mothers become a part of who we are. We become part of the fabric of our society and of our world. And, if we are fortunate, we, ourselves, become sources of inspiration and strength for those around us. We, ourselves, become the purveyors of values and of kedushah.

Just as the Torah honored Aaron, and acknowledged his contribution as the father of his sons even after they were grown men, so may we be privileged to honor our mothers, even after we are grown men and women.

Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Gilah Dror
P.S. This Shabbat we will recite the blessing for the upcoming Jewish month of Iyar. Rosh Chodesh Iyar will be on Saturday night, Sunday and Monday. May it be a month of joy and of blessing.
